The gap between tankless list price and installed price confuses people until they see what installation day contains, so here is the honest inventory. A gas tankless burner is dramatically more powerful than a tank’s, often 150,000 to 199,000 BTU against a tank’s 40,000, because it must do in real time what a tank does slowly overnight. Many homes’ existing gas lines were sized for the smaller appetite, so the quote may include upsizing the line from the meter, and occasionally the meter itself. Venting is the second line item: condensing units exhaust through dedicated PVC runs with specific slope and termination clearances, not the old tank’s flue. Can a tankless unit really run out of hot water?

It cannot run out over time the way a tank does, but it can be outrun in the moment. Every unit has a flow ceiling in gallons per minute at a given temperature rise. How big a tank does my family actually need?

Size to your busiest hour, not your headcount. A household of four with staggered schedules lives happily on 50 gallons; the same four people showering back to back with laundry running want 65 to 75 or a well-sized tankless. Does hard water really matter this much?

Yes, for both systems, and doubly for tankless. Scale is insulation where you want heat transfer: it makes tanks rumble and waste fuel, and it throttles a tankless heat exchanger.
