Where Tulsa Water Comes From, and Who Owns Each Piece of It
Tulsa drinking water comes from two sources. Lakes Spavinaw and Eucha, on Spavinaw Creek, are owned and operated by the City of Tulsa itself, which is unusual. Lake Oologah, on the Verdigris River, is operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. A third source, Lake Hudson on the Grand River, is held as an emergency supply.
The pairing is fixed and it is the reason the hardness question has two answers. Eucha and Spavinaw supply the Mohawk plant. Oologah supplies A.B. Jewell. Jewell can treat 120 million gallons a day and Mohawk 100 million, giving a combined capacity of 220 million against an average day of about 100 million. On the waste side the city runs four treatment plants, Southside, Northside, Haikey Creek and Lower Bird Creek, and Tulsa Water and Sewer together serve approximately 650,000 people. - Reddish or brown water: ask a neighbour. The city lists three causes: iron rusting in the street pipes or in your own pipes, the hot water tank rusting, or road construction and line repairs knocking particles loose. Then it gives the discriminator in plain words: if you are having trouble and your neighbours are not, your own pipes or water heater are probably rusting.
- Reddish water only from the hot tap: suspect the heater. That is the version of the same test that isolates the tank. Rust arriving only on the hot side points at the water heater rather than the supply, and it usually means the anode rod has been spent for a long time.
- White film on dishes and the coffee pot: that is hardness, not dirt. The city attributes it to calcium and magnesium settling out when water is heated or left behind when it evaporates. Vinegar or lemon juice removes it, followed by a thorough rinse. If it is heavy, check which plant serves you before deciding what to do about it.
- Black flecks that smear: look at your own fittings. - Check whether the hose itself is the problem. The city notes that some types of jacketed black rubber hose may deteriorate in the presence of chlorinated or chloraminated water. Flexible connectors under sinks and behind appliances are the usual place to find them, and they are cheap to replace and expensive to ignore.
- Musty or earthy taste in the whole neighbourhood: leave it alone. That is the geosmin season and it belongs to the lake, not to your house. Running the tap or fitting a filter will not fix a source-water compound, and the plants already dose activated carbon for it.
- Anything that only affects one fixture: it is the fixture. Whole-house symptoms come from supply. Single-fixture symptoms come from an aerator, a cartridge, a flexible connector or a stop valve. Establishing which one you have before a call is made is what keeps a small job small.
Working through that list takes about five minutes and it separates three completely different categories of problem: source water, shared distribution, and your own property.
