Plumber Omaha: your mains can run at 170 PSI and your fixtures cannot
The Metropolitan Utilities District publishes its own pressure numbers, and the gap between them is the most useful plumbing fact in this city. M.U.D. is required to hold a minimum of 20 PSI in its water mains for water quality. In normal operation the mains usually run at least 40 PSI. And along creeks and the lower elevations of Omaha, M.U.D. says the pressure can be as high as 170 PSI.
Household plumbing is not built for that. M.U.D. tells customers that after any adjustment, static pressure at a spigot should stay below 80 PSI. So in low lying parts of Omaha there can be more than twice the safe household pressure sitting at the kerb, and the only thing between it and your fixtures is a pressure reducing valve on your side of the meter. M.U.D. states plainly that it does not adjust those valves, because they are part of the property owner’s plumbing system.
That is why a burst supply line, a weeping toilet fill valve and a water heater relief valve that keeps dripping are more common questions in Omaha than they are in flat cities on one pressure plane. Everything below is from what M.U.D. publishes. Where the district does not publish a figure, this page says so instead of guessing.
The Pressure Band
Twenty, forty, one hundred and seventy
M.U.D. explains why the number moves: normal pressure in the system largely depends on elevation. Water mains in low lying areas along creeks and valleys carry relatively higher pressure than mains at hill tops and along the higher elevations of the city. Omaha is not flat, so two houses a few minutes apart can be living under quite different conditions.
Pressure also moves with the clock. The district notes that pressure can fluctuate during peak demand, and that in the Omaha area the heaviest demand for water occurs early in the morning on summer weekdays because of lawn irrigation. A pressure complaint that only happens at seven in the morning in July is a different investigation from one that never lets up.
The practical instruction M.U.D. gives is cheap and worth following. Most home improvement stores sell inexpensive water pressure gauges that attach to an outside faucet or hose spigot. Measuring before you call anyone converts a vague complaint into a number, and a number is what a plumber can act on.
The one sentence that decides who pays
M.U.D. says most residential pressure and flow problems are caused by a malfunctioning or out of adjustment pressure reducing valve, and then it draws the boundary: M.U.D. does not adjust PRVs, since the valve is part of the property owner’s plumbing system. That is a clean ownership statement and it settles a lot of arguments before they start.
It also explains the shape of the calls. If the mains near you can sit at 170 PSI and your ceiling is 80, the PRV is not an optional refinement. It is a safety device doing continuous work, and M.U.D. says outright that PRVs wear out over time and periodically need replacing, although sometimes they can be adjusted instead.
M.U.D. also recommends that any work done on your plumbing system be performed by a licensed plumber. Nebraska handles the licence itself at municipal level rather than statewide, which our Nebraska overview covers in full.
Find It First
What a PRV looks like and where it hides
M.U.D. gives a physical description precise enough to use. The valve is usually dome or bell shaped and three to four inches in diameter, installed on your water service to lower the pressure coming from the M.U.D. main. Most can be adjusted between 25 and 75 PSI.
It is usually located near where the water line enters the home. The district lists the landmarks to hunt around: the shut-off valve, the water heater, the water softener, or near your water meter. In a great many Omaha basements it is within an arm’s reach of all four.
The adjustment itself is published. Loosen the lock nut around the base of the threaded stem on top, then turn the stem clockwise to increase pressure or counterclockwise to decrease it. M.U.D. says these adjustments are best done while someone has a sink turned on and is monitoring flow and pressure, and that if the adjustment helps you should retighten the lock nut.
Then check it properly. After any adjustment the static pressure, meaning with no water running anywhere in the house, should be checked at a faucet or hose spigot to be sure it stays below 80 PSI.
The Diagnostic Order
Five things to rule out before the pipe is the answer
M.U.D. publishes a sequence, and it is a good one because it moves from the cheapest cause to the dearest. After the PRV comes the water softener: switch it to bypass mode and see if pressure improves. If it does, the softener is the cause and may need servicing or replacing.
If low pressure affects only the hot water, the district points at the water heater, and notes that most heaters have a shut off valve on them which should be checked to make sure it is fully open. It suggests consulting a licensed plumber to evaluate the condition of the heater.
If only one faucet is weak, look at the aerator screen for debris, rust, scale or other particulates. M.U.D. explains why this commonly follows a service shut off: without pressure in the indoor system, mineral particles adhering to the pipes flake off and become trapped in the aerator filter. Clean or replace it.
Then there is the one everybody laughs at and nobody checks. The master water shut-off valve, usually where the service line comes into the home and before the heater or softener, affects pressure throughout the whole house if it is partially closed. M.U.D. observes drily that plumbers may close it to work, and that homes with small children also find this valve mysteriously closed.
Tuberculation, and why it does not adjust away
If the five checks come up empty in an older Omaha house, M.U.D. names the likely answer: tuberculation. Over time, mineral deposits and corrosion sediment accumulate on the interior of galvanized pipe. That build-up decreases the interior diameter, creating a more turbulent and restricted path for water to flow through.
Two things about that are worth being straight on, and M.U.D. is straight on both. It is a flow problem rather than a safety problem: the district says the build-up does not pose a safety concern, but it does cause weaker flow. And it is not repairable by adjustment. M.U.D. states the only way to fix tuberculation is to have a licensed plumber replace the service line and the indoor plumbing, or either of them, and that switching to water conserving fixtures like low flow showerheads and faucet aerators may help in the meantime.
That is the honest fork in an old Omaha house. A PRV is a part. A softener is a service call. Tuberculation is a repipe, and any quote that promises to restore full flow in a tuberculated galvanized system without replacing pipe is promising something the utility says is not available.
Lead Service Lines
Around the 1930s, and the ownership problem behind the programme
M.U.D. publishes a date most utilities do not: in Omaha, lead service lines stopped being used by plumbers around the 1930s. That turns a vague worry into a first filter you can apply from the deed.
It also publishes the reason the problem persisted. These water service lines are the homeowner’s responsibility, M.U.D. says, and the replacement cost can be high, which is why lead pipes have not been replaced across the board. The Lead Service Line Replacement Program is the answer to that: M.U.D. states it began in summer 2024 and will take approximately ten years, prioritising areas with a large number of homes with infants and children and areas with high concentrations of lead service lines.
There is a free route to certainty. Customers with a lead, galvanized or unknown service line may request a water sample test kit and a filtered water pitcher, provided at no cost through M.U.D.’s partnership with TruePani, with a six month filter certified to remove lead and replacement filters available on request. The district also asks lead, galvanized and unknown line customers to follow its published flushing instructions after any outage or temporary disconnection.
Where the lead is not, and where it might be
M.U.D. states that it produces stable, non corrosive water to minimise any potential of lead leaching from plumbing fixtures and solder, and that the district conducts monthly water quality tests for lead. Its published result is specific about location: lead is not detected in source or raw water, in the finished water leaving the treatment plants, or in the water in the distribution mains.
Read that carefully, because it is a statement about the utility’s side of the system. It says nothing about the service line running from the main to your house, or the solder and fixtures inside it, which is exactly why the replacement programme and the free test kits exist. The utility half and the private half are two different questions and only one of them is answered by the mains testing.
Nebraskans not enrolled in the replacement programme, because their line is not lead, can order a lead in water test from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services for a small fee on 402.471.2122. M.U.D. also gives a dedicated route for programme questions at 402.504.7029.
The same utility that brings your water brings your gas
Omaha runs an arrangement that catches people who move here. The Metropolitan Utilities District supplies both water and natural gas, and it operates one emergency hotline for both on 402.554.7777, around the clock. M.U.D. lists gas leaks, the odour of gas, damaged lines, carbon monoxide symptoms and water main breaks together as emergencies on the same line.
The gas instruction is worth memorising because it is the opposite of the instinct. If you smell gas, M.U.D. says do not attempt to locate the leak. Leave the house or building right away. Do not use any electrical switches, appliances, lights, telephones or mobile devices, because an electrical charge could create a spark. Once you are in a safe place, call 402.554.7777 or 911. If someone is showing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, which M.U.D. notes are like the flu, call 911 immediately.
For a plumbing customer the practical consequence is that gas appliance work and water work sit under the same utility relationship here. A water heater is both a plumbing fixture and a gas appliance in most Omaha basements, and that is one reason the district repeats its licensed plumber recommendation on the pressure page rather than leaving it implied.

Omaha is a good city to own a house in and a demanding one to plumb in, and the two facts have the same cause. The elevation range that gives the city its river bluffs and its creek valleys is the same range that puts a wide pressure band across the water system.
