Water travels along fracture networks rather than through a homogeneous aquifer, so the mineral surfaces it contacts on the way to one well can be entirely different from the ones it contacts on the way to the next. NHDES puts it directly: wells within short distances can present very different water quality. That is why borrowing a neighbour result, or trusting a general statement about the region, is worse than useless.
Arsenic is the headline case and the numbers are not small. Private wells in New Hampshire have about a twenty five percent probability of containing naturally occurring arsenic above five micrograms per litre. It has no colour, no taste and no odour at any level, so there is no sensory warning at all. The only way to know is to test.
The state has taken that seriously in a way most have not. The federal standard was fifty parts per billion from 1975 until 2001, when EPA adopted an enforceable ten. In 2019 the New Hampshire legislature directed NHDES to establish a state arsenic maximum contaminant level of five parts per billion, which took effect in July 2021. This state is therefore stricter than the federal standard, which is a rare thing to be able to say about drinking water policy.
Radon in water is the second bedrock problem and it is separate from radon in air. NHDES estimates that around a quarter of bedrock wells carry radon at or above the level at which treating the water is recommended alongside mitigating the indoor air. A house can have both problems, one problem or neither, and again the only way to find out is a test on that specific well.

Arsenic
About a one in four probability above five parts per billion statewide, and the state limit is stricter than the federal one. Invisible and tasteless. Test, then test again for the Arsenic-III form before choosing any equipment.
Radon
Roughly a quarter of bedrock wells reach the level at which water treatment is recommended alongside indoor air mitigation. It leaves the water into the room air during showering, so it is a whole-house question rather than a drinking tap one.
Uranium
Naturally present in some granite and included in the standard analysis suite NHDES recommends. It is not addressed by an ordinary softener or a carbon filter, so it needs to be looked for deliberately rather than assumed absent.
Iron and manganese
The ones you can actually see, in staining on fixtures and laundry. They also matter technically: where natural iron reaches a certain level, iron and arsenic can be removed together in one filtration step, which changes the economics of the whole treatment plan.
Testing is cheap relative to the equipment it tells you to buy, and it is cheap relative to the equipment it tells you not to buy. A whole-house treatment step commonly runs into four figures to install, so an accurate result is the difference between solving a problem and decorating a basement.
NHDES also advises retesting after treatment goes in, quarterly for the first year and semi-annually afterwards. Treatment systems drift, media exhaust and the raw water itself can change. A system nobody has verified since installation is an assumption, not a solution.
The Part Nobody Warns You About
Treatment Equipment Can Attack Your Plumbing
This is the single most important thing on this page and it is almost never said out loud. Some water treatment used for arsenic removal changes the water chemistry in a way that turns it aggressive toward household plumbing, and if the system is not built correctly the result is worse than the problem it was installed to fix.
NHDES is explicit about it. Anion exchange removes only the negatively charged form of arsenic, and if anion resin is used it must be followed by a calcite neutraliser to prevent leaching of lead and copper from home plumbing fixtures. The guidance goes further and says not to allow installation of anion resin, or a mixed cation and anion bed, unless a neutraliser is installed, because lead will be leached from the plumbing at potentially toxic levels.
Read that as a plumbing instruction rather than a chemistry one. A vessel that comes out of a treatment catalogue can strip the protective conditions from the inside of your pipes and fittings, and the metal it mobilises ends up in the glass. The neutraliser is not an optional polish step, and anybody quoting anion exchange without one should be asked directly why.
Two related details matter for the installation. Brine regeneration discharge belongs to the septic system rather than to a drywell, because a drywell concentrates radionuclides in one spot in the garden. And reverse osmosis wastes three to four gallons for every gallon it treats, which is why it is normally fitted at a single tap rather than whole house. One Board, Three Trades
New Hampshire Plumbing Licensing Sits With the Mechanical Board
New Hampshire does not run a standalone plumbers board. The Mechanical Licensing Board sits inside the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification in Concord, and it regulates plumbing alongside the adjacent fuel trades under one roof. Its stated job is to ensure applicants are qualified for licensure, to set standards by proposing statutes and adopting administrative rules, and to take disciplinary action where the public needs protecting.
The plumbing ladder is three deep: Trainee, Journeyman and Master. Fuel gas fitting is a separate credential with its own subdivisions covering installation, service, piping, domestic appliance and hearth system work, so a person licensed for one is not automatically licensed for the other. The board also licenses business entities including corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies, which means the firm and the individual are two separate checks.
One category is genuinely unusual. Oil heating technician licensing is listed as voluntary rather than mandatory, which matters in a state where oil heat is still common. A voluntary credential is a real signal when somebody holds it and it is not evidence of anything when they do not, so it is worth asking about rather than assuming.
Inspection is handled elsewhere. The board directs inspection matters and safety concerns to the Department of Safety rather than handling them itself, so the licensing question and the inspection question go to two different phone numbers here. Knowing that in advance saves a wasted call at exactly the moment you do not want one.
Digging Into Rock
Ledge, Drilled Wells and What a Trench Really Costs
The same bedrock that shapes the water shapes the cost of every excavation. Shallow ledge is normal across much of the state, and the difference between a trench through soil and a trench through rock is not a percentage, it is a different job with different equipment. That is why an honest quote for a sewer or water service replacement here begins with a question about what is under the driveway rather than with a price per foot.
It also explains the drilled well. Dug wells exist in older properties and they draw from shallow overburden, which makes them vulnerable to surface contamination and to going dry in a hard summer. Drilled bedrock wells go deep into the rock and draw from fracture networks, which is more reliable and is also precisely why they pick up whatever the rock contains.
Yield is a fracture lottery rather than a depth calculation. A well that struggles has usually intersected too few productive fractures, and drilling deeper does not necessarily help. That is the situation in which hydrofracturing is discussed, and it is a specialist decision that belongs with a well contractor rather than with a general plumbing conversation.
For plumbing purposes the practical consequences are pressure and storage. A low yield well needs the system designed around it, with storage and appropriate pump control, rather than the household simply being told to use less water.
