Overflow tube
The tank’s safety drain. Water level should sit about an inch below its rim; water trickling into it means the level is set wrong or the fill valve will not shut off.

Diagnose by symptom, fix by part

Take the tank lid off, set it somewhere safe, and flush once while watching. The symptom you observe points directly at the failing part.

If: water trickles into the bowl, or the toilet refills by itself every so often

The flapper is leaking

Confirm with the dye test: a few drops of food coloring in the tank, wait 15 minutes without flushing. Color in the bowl convicts the flapper. Years of water exposure warp and stiffen the rubber until it no longer seals, and mineral deposits on the seat finish the job.

The fix, about 15 minutes

  1. Close the supply valve behind the toilet and flush to empty the tank.
  2. Unclip the old flapper from the overflow tube pegs and unhook its chain from the flush lever.
  3. Wipe the valve seat clean with a cloth; a gritty or pitted seat defeats even a new flapper.
  4. Install the matching replacement (take the old one to the store; sizes and mounts vary), reattach the chain with about a half inch of slack, open the supply, and dye-test again to confirm.
If: water runs constantly into the overflow tube

The water level is set too high, or the fill valve will not shut off

Look down the overflow tube. If water is spilling steadily over its rim, the tank is being filled past its design level. Sometimes that is just adjustment; sometimes the fill valve’s internal seal has worn out and it never truly closes.

The fix, 5 to 20 minutes

  1. Find the float adjustment: a screw atop the fill valve on modern float-cup designs, or a rod-and-ball you can bend or screw-adjust on older ones.
  2. Set the level so it settles about one inch below the overflow tube’s rim.
  3. Still running? Shut off the supply, remove the fill valve cap, and flush debris by briefly opening the supply with a cup inverted over the opening. Grit under the seal is a common silent culprit.
  4. If the valve still will not shut off, replace it. New fill valves cost little, include instructions, and installing one is a 20 minute job with a towel and a bucket.
If: you have to jiggle the handle to make it stop

The chain or handle is misadjusted

Jiggling works because it repositions a chain that is either catching under the flapper or holding it slightly open. This is the cheapest fix in all of plumbing.

The fix, 2 minutes

  1. Re-hook the chain so it has roughly a half inch of slack with the flapper seated. Snip excess chain length; dangling tails dive under the flapper.
  2. Check that the handle arm swings freely and the handle nut (reverse-threaded on most toilets) is snug.
  3. Flush twice to confirm clean open and clean close.

The fill valve seal is bleeding pressure

A steady hiss with no visible water movement is the fill valve leaking internally, letting a thread of water through continuously. The dye test comes back clean, the overflow is dry, and yet the meter’s leak indicator creeps.

The fix, 20 minutes

  1. Try the debris-flush from the previous card first; grit is acquitted or convicted in five minutes.
  2. Otherwise replace the fill valve outright. Match the style, set the critical level mark per the instructions (at least an inch above the overflow rim), and set the float for the correct tank level.

The full tank rebuild, for toilets past their first decade

If your diagnosis touched two or more parts, or the toilet is ten-plus years old and this is its third service, stop replacing components one at a time and reset everything with a rebuild kit. The job sounds bigger than it is. Shut off the supply, flush, and sponge the last water out of the tank. Disconnect the supply line at the tank, then remove the two or three tank bolts and lift the tank off the bowl; it is heavier than it looks, so clear a towel-covered spot in advance. With the tank on its back, everything unscrews from below: the fill valve through its supply hole, the flush valve through the large center opening. Install the new flush valve with its rubber gasket seated square, the new fill valve set to the correct height, fresh tank bolts with their washers in the right order (rubber against porcelain, metal against metal), and a new tank-to-bowl gasket. Remount the tank, snugging the bolts evenly and gently, alternating sides, until the tank is firm without rocking; porcelain punishes overtightening permanently.
