Trenchless: pipe lining and pipe bursting
Cured-in-place pipe lining inserts a resin-saturated sleeve into the damaged line and cures it into a smooth, jointless new pipe inside the old one. Pre-1950s homes typically ran vitrified clay laterals. Clay resists corrosion almost indefinitely, but it was laid in short segments with a joint every few feet, and every joint is an invitation to roots. Clay systems now approaching a century old also suffer cracked and shifted segments as soils have moved beneath them. They are, not coincidentally, the systems where trenchless lining shines: the clay holds its shape well enough to host a liner, and the liner seals every joint at once, evicting the roots permanently.
Mid-century homes, roughly 1945 to 1972, brought two materials with very different stories. Cast iron is strong but corrodes from the inside, its smooth bore roughening into a scale-crusted channel that snags debris and eventually flakes into blockages; fifty to seventy five years is a full life. Orangeburg, a wartime substitute made of compressed wood fiber and pitch, is the material we deliver bad news about most often: it absorbs moisture, deforms into an oval under soil load, and blisters internally. If a camera finds Orangeburg, replacement is not a question of whether but when, and lining is possible only if deformation has not progressed too far.
Homes from the late 1970s onward generally enjoy PVC and ABS plastic laterals: smooth, jointed with solvent-welded or gasketed connections roots rarely breach, and immune to corrosion. Their failures are almost always installation defects, bellies from poor bedding, or damage from later construction rather than the material itself. If your plastic lateral misbehaves, the camera usually finds a story with a specific villain rather than general decay.

Who owns the sewer line, me or the city?
In most municipalities the homeowner owns the lateral from the house to the connection at the main, sometimes including the section under the street. The city owns the main itself. That means repairs on the lateral are the homeowner’s responsibility, which surprises many people at the worst possible moment. Check whether your insurer offers service line coverage; it is inexpensive and worth having before you need it.
How long does a sewer line last?
Clay laterals commonly serve 50 to 60 years, cast iron 50 to 75, and Orangeburg considerably less. Modern PVC and lined pipes are rated for 50 years or more. If your home predates 1980 and the lateral has never been replaced or lined, a periodic camera inspection is cheap insurance.
Can tree roots really break a pipe?
Roots do not crush sound pipe; they exploit existing gaps. A hairline crack or a slightly separated joint sweats nutrient-rich moisture, roots find it, enter, and expand, widening the opening season by season. Cutting the roots restores flow temporarily, but only sealing the entry point, by lining or repair, ends the cycle.
